China Deploys Robotic Police Officers to Intersections, Without Arrest Powers for Now

China has begun deploying robots in traffic to help police officers with routine tasks. They’re still far from the Hollywood RoboCop from the 1987 film, as they don’t have weapons or the authority to arrest, and instead of mechanical steps, they move on wheels, writes Reuters agency.

At a busy intersection in the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou, the nearly 1.9-meter-tall robot can detect, for example, moped riders without helmets, alert them to the violation, and use mechanical arms to mimic the gestures of a traffic police officer according to traffic lights. The 98-kilogram T2 robot was developed by local technology company SUPCON Information.

Company representative Cao Hui said that the robot, using cameras, radar, and an onboard computer, can recognize, among other things, electric bike or moped riders without helmets, multiple passengers on an electric bike, vehicles stopped beyond the marked line, or pedestrians crossing on red. The robots can also answer questions about directions, parking, or traffic regulations, and in case of emergency, connect users with police. The company has deployed 15 of these robots in Hangzhou since May.

The company claims that during this period, they issued more than 170,000 warnings and helped reduce the monthly number of cases of riding without a helmet and vehicles stopping on red beyond the marked line by more than 40 percent. However, Reuters could not independently verify the data, and local traffic police did not respond to a request for comment. The deployment of robotic police officers fits into the broader efforts of Chinese technology companies to move robots from demonstration stages and trade fairs into practical life.

The company tested the robots for thousands of hours in tourist areas, near schools, in shopping districts, and during rush hours and bad weather. While strong sunlight, rain, or extreme temperatures can cause problems for cameras and radar, SUPCON states that the robots can detect violations with an accuracy of more than 95 percent. Cao added that the robot has one more undeniable advantage: “It doesn’t get tired. It can work for long periods without a break.”
