US stocks weakened as investors grow more skeptical about peace talks

Stocks in the United States weakened today. Investors are more skeptical about peace talks between the US and Iran. The US dollar showed little change ahead of Wednesday’s report on July inflation.

American indices closed in the red

The Dow Jones index, which includes stocks of 30 leading American companies, lost 0.34 percent and closed at 53,791.85 points. The broader S&P 500 index fell 0.32 percent to 7728.20 points, and the Nasdaq Composite index, which includes many companies from the advanced technology sector, declined 0.60 percent to 26,445.45 points.

The newly appointed secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council stated that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until the US changes its behavior and agrees to Iranian conditions for ending the war. Stocks of Amazon and Alphabet fell by more than two percent, while shares of space company SpaceX lost 3.5 percent.

Dollar awaits US inflation data

The dollar showed little change ahead of the anticipated report on price growth in the US. The inflation report could influence short-term expectations regarding the monetary policy of the US central bank (Fed), writes Reuters agency.

The dollar index, which tracks the dollar’s performance against a basket of six major world currencies, stagnated at 99.81 points shortly before 22:00 CEST. The euro-dollar currency pair also remained almost unchanged, with the euro standing at 1.1542 USD, as did the dollar-yen pair, where the dollar traded at 159.27 JPY.
