U.S. stock indices closed today’s trading mixed. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, comprising thirty leading industrial companies, ended today’s session at a record level thanks to signs of progress in efforts toward a peace agreement with Iran, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite fell. This was primarily driven by shares of SpaceX and AMD, whose freshly released quarterly earnings failed to convince investors. Doubts also began to resurface regarding the justification for massive spending associated with the development of artificial intelligence (AI).

Markets Dampen Excessive Optimism
“It was literally a rocket rise, we didn’t even have time to catch our breath,” said market analyst Kenny Polcari of Slatestone Wealth. “It’s progress, but the market just keeps moving. The U.S. dollar weakened on foreign exchange markets today, hovering around six-week lows. Revived hopes for ending the war with Iran dampened demand for safe-haven assets, which include the dollar, Reuters reported. The dollar index, which tracks the dollar’s performance against a basket of six major world currencies, showed a decline of 0.14 percent to 99.693 points before 10:00 PM CEST.
Against the yen, the dollar fell to its lowest level in three months after Tokyo and Washington conducted joint yen purchases on Friday. This was the first intervention by U.S. authorities on the yen exchange rate since 1998. Today it moved around 157.705 JPY per dollar, roughly the same level as yesterday.
