Spotify will start labeling AI-generated artists. It doesn’t want to mislead listeners

Swedish streaming platform Spotify is introducing new transparency rules. Starting mid-September, it will display warnings on selected profiles indicating that they are fictional identities created by artificial intelligence.

New AI Persona label and restrictions in recommendations

Swedish company Spotify, which operates the world’s leading music streaming platform, announced this step in an official press release. This is in response to feedback from its users. “Listeners are clearly telling us that they don’t like it when they see an artist profile that appears to be human, only to later discover it’s a persona created using AI,” the company stated. From mid-September onwards, selected profiles will therefore display the AI Persona label, signaling that the artist’s identity does not represent a real person.

The company also stated that profiles labeled as AI Persona will not be included in automatically generated recommendations for individual users unless they choose to follow them. At the same time, the company emphasized that the new label relates exclusively to the fictional identity of the artist, not to the actual method of music creation. The label will therefore not apply to profiles of real musicians who use artificial intelligence tools merely as an aid in their creative process.

Pressure from publishers and protection of human creators

The Swedish company’s move builds on a broader debate in the music industry about the impact of generative artificial intelligence and the protection of human authors. In recent years, streaming platforms have been grappling with a massive surge in synthetically generated compositions and entirely fictional artists, leading to strong pressure from major publishers to establish clear rules and greater transparency for listeners.

For Spotify, the new measures represent an effort to balance rapid technological progress with a fair environment for traditional musicians. For them, mass-produced synthetic content represents increasingly aggressive competition in the battle for listener attention and in the distribution of final streaming revenues.
