US firms Amazon, Microsoft and Pfizer to make major investments in France

US internet company Amazon plans to invest over 1.2 billion euros in France and create more than 3,000 jobs. The French president’s office said today, according to AFP. Microsoft has then announced investments in data centres worth four billion euros. The investments will be presented in detail during the Choose France investment forum, which starts on Monday in Versailles near Paris.

Amazon

Amazon will invest in France in generative artificial intelligence (AI), the development of logistics centres and the development of Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud infrastructure. Microsoft has similar plans. Several pharmaceutical companies have also pledged investments, including the US company Pfizer and the UK’s AstraZeneca.

In terms of industrial projects, Versailles could see the unveiling of a vision for a fertiliser factory that would significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The European consortium FertigHy will announce its intention to invest €1.3 billion, Roland Lescure, the deputy minister for industry, told Tribune Dimanche.

The meeting

The Elysee Palace is hosting a meeting between President Emmanuel Macron and 180 executives of foreign companies in an effort to strengthen France’s position in the investment field.

Artificial intelligence, decarbonisation and finance will be the main themes at the conference. Macron and the government are offering companies a stable tax environment, in return for which they expect funds to revive French industry, according to economic website Les Échos. According to AFP, the promised projects are most often extensions of existing ones with plans for several years ahead.
