The Nord Stream 2 pipeline became part of the psychological war between Russia and the West. Although it has been ready to supply gas since September, it is still awaiting consecration by the German and EU authorities.
The German regulator of energy networks, the Bundesnetzagentur, has previously said that a decision on the commissioning of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline will not be made until the second half of this year. However, new information has now emerged that the pipeline could get the green light a few months earlier.
“The agency is assessing the pipeline according to plan. It could be operational as early as mid-2022. Nord Stream 2 is important, “said Klaus-Dieter Maubach, CEO of Uniper, one of the five companies that co-financed the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.
Maubach also denied that anyone would interfere in the approval process. “I do not see any political interference,” he added. However, he did not rule out that Nord Stream could be the target of US sanctions. “Of course there are political risks. If the Russian-Ukrainian conflict intensifies, the pipeline could be subject to sanctions by the United States, “he added.
