May brought an increase in employment in the US by almost a million people. The dollar strengthens

Two good news came from the American labor market at the beginning of June. Employment rose by almost a million people in May, and the number of new applications for unemployment benefits fell below 400,000 last week.

During May, the number of employed Americans increased by 978 thousand people. That’s about 300,000 more than respondents expected among economists asked by Reuters. At the same time, the number of new applications for unemployment benefits in the US fell to 389,000 last week. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate fell to 5.7 percent. Until a few weeks ago, this indicator exceeded the 6% threshold.

The US dollar reacted to the positive data by strengthening against the basket of major world currencies by 0.5 percent. He managed to wipe out part of the losses he recorded during April and May. He lost two in April and another 1.6 percent in May. The euro traded around $ 1.21 per euro on Thursday, with 110.1 Japanese yen earning for one dollar. The British pound lost 0.4 percent against the dollar and traded at $ 1.41.
