French President Emmanuel Macron will push for a simplification of the bureaucratic process for permitting the construction of renewable energy projects. According to him, the building of new capacities needs to be significantly accelerated.
France needs more electricity
Visiting a wind park in Brittany, Emmanuel Macron said France will need about 40 percent more electricity by 2050 than it does today. However, in order to ensure that there is no shortage of electricity by then, the production capacity of French power plants will have to be significantly increased.
And the French President sees the easiest way to do this is to simplify the process of building renewable energy plants. The project in Brittany has just opened after ten years of construction. “It is still taking too long in France,” Macron said, adding that the pace of capacity building needs to be doubled.
France leans towards renewables
France is one of the countries that have long relied on nuclear power, but developments this year have shown that French nuclear power plants are ageing and there is probably not enough will to replace them with new units. A greater focus on renewables is therefore a logical alternative, also with regard to climate goals.
