BITmarkets Publishes an Overview of Football’s Top 10 Champions of Crypto in 2026

BITmarkets announces the publication of its new overview, Football’s Top 10 Champions of Crypto in 2026, examining how far the game’s biggest clubs have thrown open their doors to crypto.

The overview notes that after a brutal “crypto winter” in 2022 and 2023 that saw the market freeze and sponsorships evaporate, the sector has come roaring back, and football is where it is spending. During the 2024/25 season, crypto brands poured $565 million into sports sponsorships, a 20% jump year-over-year, and football took the lion’s share, capturing 43% ($243 million) of all crypto sports spending, easily outrunning Formula 1 and basketball.

Which clubs and competitions have gone furthest in embracing crypto partners? BITmarkets drew up a list of the ten most crypto-open clubs and projects in the world game.

The Big Shift: Compliance Over “Get-Rich-Quick” Tokens

In the first wave, clubs pushed highly speculative “fan tokens.” Promoted as fan-engagement tools, they drew heavy fire from supporter groups and regulators who argued they were volatile assets hiding behind club loyalty. Now the game has changed: clubs increasingly choose regulated trading platforms built around mainstream trust and compliance.

  • Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal have each brought in regulated European crypto and investment platforms as official partners, with deals built around user education and safe trading.
  • Tottenham Hotspur, Atlético de Madrid and RB Leipzig are among a wave of clubs that have handed their shirt sleeves to crypto exchanges as part of sweeping European sleeve strategies.
  • Lazio pulled off one of the year’s most creative moves, taking a crypto-based prediction-market platform as its front-of-shirt sponsor — a deal framed around “fan intelligence and data” to stay inside strict betting-ad rules.

Openness is not limited to clubs. The game’s biggest names have gone crypto-open too: Lionel Messi signed a reported $20 million, multi-year global ambassadorship with a fan-token platform, underlining how far digital assets have moved into the mainstream of the sport.

Regulatory Speed Bumps and the Gambling-Ban Catalyst

From the 2026/27 season, the Premier League’s collective ban on front-of-shirt gambling sponsors takes effect. Betting brands have long been the biggest backers of mid-tier clubs, around 11 of the league’s 20 clubs currently carry gambling front-of-shirt sponsors, leaving an estimated £60–140 million annual gap once those deals are phased out.

With those slots opening up, cash-flush crypto brands are among the few able to match the numbers. BITmarkets expects that from 2026 onward, crypto partners will not just sit on the sleeves; clubs will increasingly hand them front-of-shirt space across the Premier League.

According to BITmarkets, as clubs look to replace gambling money and build new digital revenue streams, football has firmly established itself as crypto’s favorite pitch, and the clubs above are leading the way.
