Canada convinces US to continue construction of Keystone XL oil pipeline

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his people are pressuring the incoming U.S. administration to reconsider the cancellation of the construction of the Keystone XL oil pipeline. Joe Biden is reportedly planning to give the pipeline a red light in line with his beliefs about fossil energy sources.

The Keystone XL pipeline is owned by Canadian company TC Eneregy Corporation. According to the Canadian side, the eventual end of the project would pose a threat to canadian jobs and worsen Canadian-American relations.

“We understand the promise that Joe Biden made in his presidential campaign to cancel this project,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said. Biden is a well-known opponent of fossil fuels, which outgoing President Donald Trump has supported.

But Trudeau said he plans to talk to the new US president about the Keystone XL oil pipeline in the coming days, according to Reuters. “I firmly believe that our arguments will be heard and taken into account when deciding the fate of the project,” Trudeau added. The governor of the Canadian province of Alberta, Jason Kenney, has threatened legal action if the US side halts the project. Trudeau declined to comment on whether he would support the effort.
