Directors of Anthropic, OpenAI, and other artificial intelligence (AI) companies are privately considering possible scenarios of public and political rebellion that could follow a catastrophic AI-related event. They anticipate a widespread event, likely a cyberattack disabling access to financial services, internet connectivity, or even electricity and water supplies, the Axios website reported.

Consequences of AI Failure: Public Backlash and Pressure on Politicians
The first instance of serious real-world harm caused by dangerous AI would turn an already distrustful public against this technology and against industry leaders, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Axios reports. According to scenarios, people could also turn against President Donald Trump due to his reluctance to regulate AI.
While scenario planning is common in many companies and national security environments, the difference, according to Axios, is that many leading AI researchers and leaders believe a widespread incident is inevitable. One possibility is that an AI agent could go rogue within an internal testing environment. A malicious actor could also find unexpected ways to misuse available AI models.

Critical Event Looms Within a Year, Company Self-Regulation Is Insufficient
Several artificial intelligence industry experts told Axios they believe a significant event will occur within the next six to twelve months. Planning, among other things, focuses on educating members of the aging U.S. Congress, which is not keeping pace with the AI revolution, the website noted.
This concern grows as technology companies try to define their own security protocols and so-called risk lines (red lines), which, if crossed, would lead to a temporary suspension of advanced model development. Although developers like OpenAI and Anthropic are implementing internal safety frameworks and declaring cooperation with governmental AI safety institutes (AI Safety Institute), critics warn that voluntary self-regulation may not be sufficient to prevent a global incident. The pressure to introduce stricter control mechanisms and international safety standards is thus constantly increasing.
