Teenagers spend, on average, less than 15 minutes a day with the AI chatbot ChatGPT. Fewer than two percent of adolescents communicate with it for more than three hours daily. According to Reuters, this was stated today (Wednesday) by ChatGPT’s creator, OpenAI. The report comes at a time of increasing calls for greater regulation of tech companies due to the risks artificial intelligence (AI) poses to children.

OpenAI has released data on how adolescents use AI for the very first time. The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence platforms has raised concerns about their impact on young people’s mental health and safe development.
These concerns have been further amplified by research into the harmful effects of social media on young users. In August, Meta pledged to pay up to $18 billion and restrict teenagers’ use of Facebook and Instagram. This settles lawsuits alleging the platforms were designed to be addictive for children.

Sam Altman’s company stated that in nearly half of teenage conversations where a reminder to take a break appeared, users either took a break or ended the chat within five minutes. According to Reuters, the company aims to prove that its measures to regulate teenagers’ use of the service are working.
OpenAI reported that users with access to a specialized version for teenagers sent more education-related messages and used tools such as learning visualizations and study mode. The company is now working to add a college application planning tool to assist students with requirements, deadlines, and steps for obtaining financial aid.
