Vietnam to import electricity from Laos

Vietnam’s electricity state-owned company EVN signed five new agreements with Laos to buy electricity starting from next year

Deals between state-owned EVN and two Laos’ Phongsubthavy and Chealun Sekong groups were signed in Hanoi few days ago. Vietnam will start buying electricity next year and will continue in 2022 and 2023.

One of the most populated Southeast Asian countries will buy electricity from five hydropower plants. Next year the amount could exceed supply by 6.6 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) and up to 15 billion kWh in 2023. The plants supplying Vietnam have combined capacity of 363 megawatts.

Vietnam is facing electricity shortage as its consumption highly exceeds country needs. Hydro plants are largest electricity producers and represent 40% of total electricity. Thermal power plants produce 30% of electricity and one fifth stands for gas power plants. Remaining ten percent are shared by other sources, including renewables ones.
