Shell will produce green hydrogen. It will be combined with a Norwegian aluminium producer

The British-Dutch mining giant takes the green transition seriously. It will join forces with Norwegian aluminium producer Norsk Hydro to produce green hydrogen.

Royal Dutch Shell and Hydro Havrand (Norsk Hydro division) have signed a memorandum of understanding on the basis of which they should jointly start producing so-called green hydrogen. It is a raw material that is produced using renewable energy sources. Hydrogen will then be used in industry or transport as an energy raw material to help decarbonise the economy.

Shell and Hydro will first look for the most convenient locations in Europe where green hydrogen could be produced efficiently. This is also with regard to its further use, which is related, among other things, to its efficient transport. “We are looking for places that have the best potential for both production and use. We can also use hydrogen in our existing plants,” Per Christian Eriksen, head of Hydro Havrand, told Reuters.

Shell and Hydro Havrand will work together to create an integrated hydrogen chain that has the ambition to “be a strong global player in the hydrogen market,” according to Shell’s vice president of renewable energy, Elisabeth Brinton.
