Security Team Member Leaves OpenAI, Warns of Inadequate Measures

One of OpenAI’s artificial intelligence (AI) safety employees has left the company. He warned that leading AI firms are not taking sufficient measures to minimize the risks associated with this technology. David Robinson thus joins a growing number of industry workers who are pointing out the threats related to AI, Bloomberg agency writes.

Robinson Criticizes Trial-and-Error Approach

Robinson worked on the safety team at OpenAI, where he was responsible for transparency. In an article for The Atlantic magazine, he wrote that OpenAI “thrives on a trial-and-error approach.” He added that as AI capabilities grow, so do the risks associated with such an approach. In this context, he pointed to instances where AI got out of control during tests.

„My former colleagues are smart, work hard, and try to make the right decisions,“ Robinson stated. „However, because the company rushes from one product to another, it does not achieve the level of diligence that I consider necessary,“ he added. According to him, AI companies should use similarly stringent safety measures as nuclear power plants, so that „occasional and inevitable human error does not open the door to catastrophe.“

Debate on AI Risks Intensifies

Recently, there have been increasing reports that AI models, while performing assigned tasks, have crossed set boundaries and attempted to penetrate foreign computer systems. For example, a July incident garnered significant attention when OpenAI’s artificial intelligence penetrated the systems of Hugging Face. Some AI researchers also warn that the rapid development of this technology could lead to the extinction of the human species in the not-too-distant future. Calls are also emerging to slow down AI development and for greater regulation of this technology.

OpenAI is a pioneer in the field of artificial intelligence. In 2022, it made its ChatGPT chatbot available to the public for free. The system quickly gained popularity and significantly contributed to a wave of public, media, and investor interest in artificial intelligence. The company now plans to list its shares on the stock exchange. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated last month that people have a right to be concerned about AI, but should trust companies in the sector to keep the technology at a safe level. Dario Amodei, CEO of rival company Anthropic, called for a slowdown in the development of AI models in September. Altman and entrepreneur Elon Musk, who is behind xAI, also joined his call on social media platform X.
