Westinghouse extends contract to supply reactors to Ukraine

American industrial concern Westinghouse has signed an agreement with Ukraine to supply additional reactors for its nuclear power plants. They make a total of seventeen.

Westinghouse will now add two more reactors to Ukraine. This time it is the VVER-440 reactors for the Roven nuclear power plant. Ukraine has previously signed an agreement with Westinghouse to supply 15 VVER-1000 reactors, six of which are already heading to Ukraine.Westinghouse is expected to deliver more next year. The additional contract for the Ukrainian side was signed by Energoatom, whose full name is National Nuclear Energy Company.

In addition, both parties signed a letter of intent to examine the localisation of the production of fuel cartridge components. “With this important agreement, we are further expanding our commitment to Ukraine’s energy security and focusing on further improving its nuclear fleet,” said Westinghouse CEO Patrick Fragman.

Kiev’s interest is to completely get rid of dependence on Russia’s energy supply, including nuclear fuel. Russian-Ukrainian relations came to a freezing point in 2014 after Moscow annexed Ukraine’s Crimea peninsula.
