OpenAI won’t go public this year due to AI safety concerns, says CEO

American company OpenAI, which operates in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), will not list its shares on the stock exchange this year. Company CEO Sam Altman said this in an interview with Fortune magazine. He pointed to concerns about AI safety in this context.

AI safety complicates stock exchange listing plans

“Given everything that’s happening around safety, I really think that going public right now wouldn’t be prudent,” Altman said. More and more U.S. lawmakers are now calling for the creation of new rules to regulate AI systems, according to Reuters, as researchers point to the potential negative impacts of artificial intelligence. Two researchers from Anthropic, a competitor to OpenAI, for example, warned that the rapid development of AI could lead to the extinction of the human race in the not-too-distant future, Reuters reports.

According to Bloomberg sources, Altman told employees at a company meeting this week that OpenAI is considering slowing down the development of its most advanced AI models. At the same time, he expressed hope that other companies working on AI will do the same. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei then called on AI companies to slow down the pace at which they expand the capabilities of their models. “Progress will still be rapid, and we need to wisely use the time we gain from that,” he said.

OpenAI and Anthropic postpone stock market plans

OpenAI submitted a request to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in June to list on the stock exchange. However, it did not disclose the timeline for the initial public offering (IPO) at that time.

Competitor Anthropic is also preparing to enter the stock market. Reuters sources reported this month that the company has decided to postpone the date of its stock exchange listing. According to sources, preparations for the initial public offering should therefore begin at the earliest in mid-October, and the company could complete its stock market entry several days before the November U.S. congressional elections.
