OpenAI pledges more rigorous reporting on incidents involving artificial intelligence systems

American company OpenAI wants to report more consistently on cases where its artificial intelligence systems slip out of control or behave in unexpected or troubling ways. The company has therefore introduced a new system for tracking, investigating, and disclosing these incidents.

OpenAI introduces new incident reporting system

OpenAI also reported on six previously undisclosed incidents recorded over the past six months. These included cases such as withholding information from users or generating false information. The company stated that its previous reporting on similar events had been less systematic and less frequent than would be ideal.

The new system is designed to ensure faster disclosure of information, even in cases where the company has not yet been able to determine the exact cause or significance of a particular incident. OpenAI notes that some of the disclosed cases may later turn out to be isolated events with no broader significance or connection to further technological developments.

AI safety remains subject of growing debate

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said this week that people have a right to be concerned about artificial intelligence, but that they should also trust companies in the industry to keep the technology at a safe level. Meanwhile, the head of rival company Anthropic, Dario Amodei, called for slowing down the development of AI models. Altman and entrepreneur Elon Musk also joined this call on the social network X.

Some researchers have long warned of the risks associated with the rapid development of artificial intelligence. OpenAI’s Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar said she is not worried about a scenario in which AI would use weapons of mass destruction against people, but stressed the need to take safety issues seriously. OpenAI, which made ChatGPT publicly available in 2022, is now also planning to take its shares public on the stock exchange.
