Huawei has concluded a multi-year patent agreement with HP for wi-fi technologies

Chinese technology company Huawei has concluded a multi-year cross-licensing agreement with American computer manufacturer HP for wi-fi technology patents. The agreement also covers the latest wi-fi 7 standard. The companies have not disclosed the financial terms.

Agreement confirms Huawei’s strong patent position

The agreement will allow both companies to use each other’s patents. According to HP, this is a standard licensing agreement concerning technologies widely used throughout the industry, not the beginning of broader business cooperation with Huawei. The agreement also demonstrates that the Chinese company remains a significant holder of patents used in global wireless technology standards.

Huawei has significantly expanded its patent portfolio and licensing business in recent years. The company states that it ranks among the largest holders of patents required for wi-fi 6 technology and charges licensing fees for the use of its technologies. By the end of 2025, its inventions related to wi-fi were being used by more than 1.6 billion consumer electronic devices, not counting mobile phones.

New agreement follows previous patent disputes

Huawei filed a lawsuit against HP in August 2025 at a patent court in Europe for alleged unauthorized use of a patent for wi-fi 6 technology. HP subsequently joined the Sisvel patent pool for wi-fi 6 in November, thereby ending legal disputes with Huawei and Philips. The new agreement now covers a broader set of patents, including wi-fi 7 technologies.

Huawei continues to face American trade restrictions in place since 2019. These complicate the Chinese company’s access to advanced chips and important software, but do not automatically prevent it from concluding patent licensing agreements. HP is the world’s second-largest manufacturer of personal computers with a 21.3 percent market share, according to Gartner, behind China’s Lenovo.
