Historic Meeting Between Trump and Kim Jong Un Signals Possible Breakthrough in US-DPRK Nuclear Talks

In the surprise meeting between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, both leaders agreed to continue further dialogue in regards to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. As the first American President to step into North Korean soil, Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un agreed to discuss a possible easing of tensions between the two countries.

Both the North Korean and American governments were satisfied with the results of the meeting, with US Secretary of State Mike Pompey stating that further talks might occur later in July and the North Korean news agency describing the meeting as “full of understanding and sympathy”.

The meeting between the two leaders came after a summit in Vietnam earlier this year, where no substantial progress was made in regards to the possible denuclearization of the peninsula. Yet despite the joyous environment surrounding the encounter, analysts agree that substantial changes in policy positions have to occur on both sides for any genuine agreement to be established.
