Global trade activity is at record levels, WTO barometer reports

business, export, import, trade

World trade continues robust recovery after Covid shock. This is based on the World Trade Barometer goods trade barometer. The indicator clearly exceeded the levels it was at before the coronavirus crisis.

The Goods Trade Barometer climbed to 110.4 points in July, the highest level in measurement history that began five years ago. It is up more than 20 points year-on-year. Air freight (114 points), e-component trade (112.4) and maritime container transport (110.8) recorded the highest activity ever.

The key barometer level is 100. If its current value is above 100, it signals an expansion of international trade, otherwise it is a development below the long-term trend and indicates a rather trade downturn.

Currently, the Goods Trade Barometer designed by the World Trade Organization is approximately eight points above pre-current levels. It reached its highest level so far at the beginning of 2018, slightly above 105 points. International trade volume increased by 5.7 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of this year. In the last quarter of 2020, it was only 0.7 percent, wto statistics show.
