So far, 2026 has definitely not been a year in which everything has been rising. Quite the opposite. The broader cryptocurrency market experienced a difficult start to the year, with its total market capitalization falling by 20.4% in the first quarter according to CoinGecko, while Bitcoin lost 22% during the same period. Despite this, a group of smaller and mid-sized cryptocurrencies managed to deliver returns that multiplied investors’ original capital several times over.
The biggest profits this year did not come from simply holding major cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin or Ethereum. The highest returns appeared mainly among smaller altcoins, memecoins, and projects connected to artificial intelligence. However, these sectors also carry extraordinary risk, low liquidity, and sharp price swings.
How We Selected the TOP 5 Cryptocurrencies
The ranking is based on data from CoinLore, which tracks yearly cryptocurrency performance according to ROI, meaning return on investment from the first recorded close price of 2026 to the latest available price. CoinLore also states that the ranking only includes coins meeting minimum trading volume and market capitalization requirements, while excluding dollar stablecoins and yield-bearing dollar tokens.

*This is an approximate calculation excluding fees, taxes, exchange rate fluctuations, and without considering whether investors could actually buy or sell at those prices. Data is based on CoinLore rankings as of May 12, 2026.
1. SIREN: This Year’s King of Returns — and Extreme Volatility
According to available data, SIREN has been the biggest winner of the year. Between the start of the year and May 12, it gained more than 1,500%. In other words, an investor who put 10,000 CZK into the token at the beginning of the year would theoretically now hold more than 160,000 CZK.
According to CoinGecko, the rapid growth was partly fueled by February movements related to token burns and a supply shock. CoinGecko reported that SIREN jumped 346% at the time after tokens linked to a donation wallet associated with CZ were reportedly burned publicly.
At the same time, this is far from a risk-free investment. CoinGecko notes that SIREN still trades significantly below its all-time high of 3.61 USD reached in March 2026. The token generated massive gains over recent months, but also demonstrated how quickly prices can collapse after explosive growth.

2. SKYAI: When Crypto Meets Artificial Intelligence
The second best-performing cryptocurrency in this year’s ranking is SKYAI. According to CoinLore, it has gained more than 1,100% since the start of the year.
The project rides one of the strongest narratives currently driving the market: the combination of cryptocurrencies, blockchain data, and artificial intelligence.
As of May 12, CoinGecko listed SKYAI at around 0.547 USD, with a market capitalization exceeding 547 million USD and a 24-hour trading volume above 75 million USD. Over the past year, the token gained more than 1,000%, though it still traded well below its recent all-time high.
3. Venice Token: The AI Coin That Became One of the Year’s Biggest Stories
The third best-performing coin is Venice Token, traded under the ticker VVV. According to CoinLore, it appreciated by more than 920% since the beginning of the year.
Unlike some smaller speculative tokens, VVV has a stronger story tied to a real product. The token is connected to the Venice AI platform, which focuses on private access to artificial intelligence tools.
As of May 12, CoinGecko listed Venice Token at around 16.85 USD, with a market capitalization above 770 million USD and weekly gains exceeding 80%. The token was also tradable on major exchanges including Coinbase, Kraken, and Gate, giving it significantly higher liquidity compared to smaller altcoins.
Still, risks remain substantial. During the monitored period, VVV continued trading roughly 25% below its all-time high of 22.58 USD. This demonstrates that even AI-focused projects with strong narratives can quickly leave investors sitting on losses if they enter at the wrong time.
4. NEET: Smaller Token, Bigger Gains — and Bigger Risks
Fourth place belongs to the token Not in Employment, Education, or Training, known as NEET. According to CoinLore, it gained more than 340% since the start of the year.
From a return perspective, NEET ranks among the most successful cryptocurrencies of 2026. From a risk perspective, however, it clearly belongs to the highly speculative segment of the market.
CoinGecko listed NEET at around 0.037 USD, with a market capitalization near 37 million USD and daily trading volume above 4 million USD. The token trades mainly on platforms such as PumpSwap, Raydium, and LBank, indicating liquidity far below that of major cryptocurrencies.
NEET also remained below its all-time high of 0.04584 USD, while trading more than 1,500% above its all-time low. Such volatility illustrates the nature of smaller tokens: they can surge rapidly, but they can also collapse just as quickly.

5. Alaya Governance Token: AI Data Infrastructure as Another Winning Theme
The fifth best-performing cryptocurrency in this ranking is Alaya Governance Token, or AGT. According to CoinLore, it appreciated by nearly 319% since the start of the year.
Once again, the project benefits from investor enthusiasm surrounding the intersection of blockchain and artificial intelligence.
As of May 12, CoinGecko listed AGT at around 0.014 USD, with a fully diluted valuation exceeding 70 million USD and a 24-hour trading volume near 3.7 million USD. The token still traded significantly below its all-time high of 0.03632 USD reached in May 2025.
What Do This Year’s Winners Have in Common?
This year’s ranking highlights several clear trends. The largest returns did not come from the biggest cryptocurrencies by market capitalization, but from smaller projects where even a limited inflow of capital could significantly move prices.
Recurring themes include artificial intelligence, AI agents, data infrastructure, token burns, and strong community-driven narratives.
At the same time, these assets are often far riskier than Bitcoin or Ethereum. Daily price swings of tens of percent are common. This means some investors were able to become significantly wealthier — but only if they entered early and managed to withstand extreme volatility. Those buying after massive rallies may instead be purchasing near the top.
