South America’s biggest wind farm to grow in Chile

Wind project will be built in Chilean Atacama Desert

Electricity will be supplied in 3 years, and the plant will occupy 80km2.

Chilean energy company Colbun has applied for an environmental license to build and operate the largest wind project in Latin America. Installed capacity should grow up to 980MW, which is comparable to one reactor of nuclear power plant.

The wind project is expected to generate around 2,000GWh of electricity annually, and 140 wind turbines will secure the production. The wind farm will be built on 80km2 in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile. Cobun purchased the land from Chilean Ministry of National Assets in September 2017.

“The Horizonte project is an important step not only for our plans on development of renewable energy, but also for our country’s transition to emission-free energy,” Thomas Keller, Colbun CEO, said. Investment is expected to reach $700 million, construction will take 3 years and will employ 1,200 workers.
