U.S. chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has agreed to acquire World Labs, a company focused on artificial intelligence (AI) development, for $8.2 billion (approximately CZK 176 billion). AMD announced this in a press release, adding that it would pay the purchase price with its shares. The company expects to complete the transaction this year.

World Labs to Boost AMD’s Artificial Intelligence Research
World Labs was co-founded and is led by prominent artificial intelligence scientist Fei-Fei Li. She is a professor at Stanford University and previously worked on AI development at the internet company Google. Upon completion of the transaction, she will become AMD’s Executive Vice President and Chief Scientist.
“This acquisition will bring a top-tier team of researchers and experts to AMD, strengthening its ability to develop the AI hardware, software, and systems needed for emerging models and applications,” stated AMD, which had previously invested in World Labs.

AMD Intensifies Rivalry with Nvidia
AMD competes with domestic rival Nvidia, which currently dominates the global market for AI chips. By acquiring World Labs, AMD aims to further strengthen its capabilities in developing hardware, software, and systems for artificial intelligence.
Nvidia agreed this month to pay $12.9 billion (approximately CZK 277 billion) to acquire the Hugging Face platform, where developers share and utilize open AI models and data for their development.
