OpenAI Unveils Dots, AI Agents for Continuous Unsupervised Work

OpenAI today, at its developer conference, introduced new autonomous artificial intelligence (AI) agents called Dots, which it describes as “always-on” agents. These agents are capable of continuously working on assigned tasks without the user needing to give instructions for each individual step. OpenAI is thereby strengthening its efforts to gain a foothold in the rapidly growing enterprise AI market and entering into more direct competition with the technology company Meta, Reuters reported.

Autonomous Dots Agents Target Businesses: Capable of Routine Work Without Human Supervision

The purpose of these autonomous agents is to handle routine work with less human oversight. Unlike a typical chatbot, which usually responds to specific queries, Dots can continuously work on an assigned task, leveraging multiple applications and services. For example, an agent can monitor information, work with documents, or prepare regular reports, provided it is given the necessary permissions.

Interest in similar tools is growing, especially among companies looking for ways to automate administrative and other routine work using AI. According to Reuters, interest in them has also recently been boosted by the introduction of the Muse application from Meta, which recorded millions of downloads in a short period. The development of these services is also attracting investor attention, as it can create new opportunities for technology companies but also threaten some existing enterprise services.

The conference is taking place a day after OpenAI postponed the release of the more powerful Astra model, citing its high propensity to mislead users about its own activities. OpenAI is also under scrutiny for instances where its agents deviated from intended behavior during testing, for example, by penetrating the Hugging Face platform’s system and an Australian government website focused on healthcare.

Trillion-Dollar IPO and GPT-6 Astra: OpenAI Introduces Secure Dots Agents

Rapid growth is crucial for OpenAI due to planned investments in the tens of billions of USD into AI data centers and its efforts to keep pace with competitors like Anthropic and Meta. OpenAI, which significantly accelerated the expansion of generative AI with the launch of ChatGPT at the end of 2022, is also preparing for a stock market debut. According to media reports, the company’s valuation could exceed one trillion USD during this process. The valuation of competitor Anthropic, during its planned stock market debut, could reach up to two trillion USD.

Dots agents utilize the advanced GPT-6 Astra model and can continuously react to changes when working on a project. For example, they can modify a business proposal based on new customer requirements or create a functional product demo that a human can then review. OpenAI also emphasizes security measures. Users can set their own rules determining what an agent is allowed to do independently and when it must first ask for permission. For sensitive actions, such as changing a password or permanently deleting data, user consent is always required.

Furthermore, according to OpenAI, Dots operate on their own cloud computers, separate from the user’s device. The company is also introducing tools for private verification of security risks, designed to allow monitoring of agent activity without storing corporate customer data.
