Turkish-German airline SunExpress to buy up to 90 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft

SunExpress Airlines will purchase up to 90 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. The deal includes 45 737-8 and 737-10 models with an option to purchase up to 45 more aircraft. Turkey’s leading leisure carrier, which is a joint venture between Turkish Airlines and Germany’s Lufthansa, announced the decision at the Dubai Airshow. The companies did not mention the value of the contract.

Future plans

“We will more than double our fleet in the next decade, reaching 150 aircraft by 2033. The addition of the 737-10, the newest 737 MAX aircraft with up to 230 seats, to our fleet will also allow us to further increase capacity,” said SunExpress CEO Max Kownatzki.

SunExpress previously ordered 42 737-8s from Boeing and has already received nine.

Estimated value

Catalogue prices put the value of the order at around $5 billion (roughly CZK 115 billion), Reuters reported. However, airlines routinely receive significant discounts on large orders.

Founded in 1989, SunExpress flies more than 175 routes to 30 countries and carries more than 10 million passengers annually. It has more than 3,500 employees and a fleet of 66 aircraft. It specializes in direct connections between Europe, Turkey, and popular holiday destinations.
