Three European countries to start producing hydrogen

A consortium of companies from Portugal, Denmark and the Netherlands will build a more than $1 billion green hydrogen production facility in Portugal. The hydrogen plant will be powered by renewable energy and the project is expected to start operating by 2025.

The green hydrogen plant will be built in the port city of Sines, about 150 kilometres south from the Portuguese capital Lisbon. The so-called “green hydrogen” is produced using renewable resources. Therefore, the consortium of companies will not only build the hydrogen production facility. Wind and photovoltaic power plants construction in Sines is also planned.

Hydrogen and its versatility

According to the companies involved, the facility will include a 500 megawatt electrolyser. It should be capable of producing 50,000 tonnes of hydrogen and 500,000 tonnes of ammonia per year. Hydrogen will be used mainly in the transport sector, but also in the steel and chemical industries. It will also contribute to a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Production to start within three years

The facility is expected to start operating in 2025 and to reach full capacity within the next five years. “Portugal is well positioned to become one of the leaders in the European Union in the energy transition,” Rogaciano Rebelo, head of the consortium, told Reuters.
