Sweden unveils ambitious plan to rapidly increase wind power capacity

The Nordic country currently consumes around 140 terawatt hours of electricity per year. This would cover about 85 percent of Sweden’s electricity consumption.

In the first phase, Sweden wants to build wind power plants that would be able to produce about 20 to 30 terawatt hours of electricity per year. This would provide about one-fifth of its current electrical energy consumption. In the coming years, the capacity of wind farms in Sweden is expected to grow to a total of 120 terawatt hours of electricity production per year. This would mean covering 85 per cent of current consumption.

Wind farms would be built offshore near both the east and west coasts. The Swedish government has informed about the plans. “This is a way to ensure security of electricity supply and to ensure energy transformation and also to ensure affordable energy prices in the long term,” said Swedish Energy Minister Khashayar Farmanbar.

The construction of wind farms is in line with the Nordic country’s long-term strategy to gradually wean itself off fossil fuels. “We want to accelerate the development of wind energy. We will identify suitable areas where new sources could be built,” added Climate Minister Annika Strandhaell.
